AREVA FRA-93 construction

Hello All,

I am a Dutchman living in the South of France and normally an IOM sailor.
Seeing what you guys are doing with these scale America's Cup boats makes me want to build one of these too.

So I downloaded one of the plans from the Italian site and started with my AREVA FRA-93!

I will be building this boat following the current IACC 120 class rules as posted on the Italian site.
It looks like there is a discussion going of how to proceed with the class in the future,
but my Italian is too much non exsitant to understand anything of the discussion on the forum.



You can see I really have only just began. I will keep you posted on progress.



I am moulding the hull in balsa and will cover it later with a layer of carbon to make it strong enough.





I hope to meet some of you guys on the water in the future some time.

Hello,

Here a quick photo update on progress.
I have taken on the brown packing tape methode. At first I thought of making a balsa sandwich construction,
but this will be lighter, I think and just as strong.



Laminated 2 layers of 120gr carbon and 1 of 80gr glass. I have added some UD carbon strips along the keel and deck line.





I have "build" a little oven arround one of my heaters in the home using a couple of bed blankets;
it worked out very effective, easily maintained 50C +!

Nice work, continue to post the pictures of progress, and the weights.
This kind of work, without famale mould, it is faster but may be after, the work for the perfect smooth of the hull is harder and the hull weight could increase. Instead the work to assembly the deck with the hull is a little bit less precise. I know that because I made my SUI-100 on this way. Have you considered that?

Thanks for your input.

I realise more work wil be required to finish the hull, but other wise all this work has to be done on the male mold.
There wil be a little weight panalty, but I think the weight is not extremely critical. It should be fairly easy to stay within the 4.5kg limit.

I have taken the hull of the male mold and I am very happy with how stiff the hull form is, and the weight after rough trimming 210gr!





My intention now is to set the hull up in a jig to keep it all straight when assembling the interior and deck.
Unfortunatly this will have to wait, because I will have to return to my job for another shift onboard, approx. 2mth

Hello Chris, hello Claudio,

Nice to see you guys here! Yes, Chris is the Chris from former website Chirssails.
I am not sure why he has taken it offline, maybe to busy building boats for himself?

At this moment I am on board my job in Belize (I work on ships) and managed working on a deck mould here a little.
I have also photoshoped all the art work together so that I can get this printed on decal paper later.

hope to report some progress soon.
